Degree and Competence are far cousins in India

For when a great graduate passes
With a degree against his name
No matter whether he won or lost
But what matters is how he played the game

Friends feel lucky if you are a patient & Dr. Munna forgot a needle instead of scissors in your belly.

Good day to everyone present here… I am Ashutosh Chittora to speak ‘FOR’ the motion.

I think degree or diploma has nothing to do with competition and practical knowledge.
Degree should not be considered as the testing tool to filter out talent because the process of getting good scores in an examination is not a big deal as our education emphasizes more on cramming and not the practical knowledge.

The one popular sms as popped said , “ Throw stones on Pune or Bangalore roads , it will either hit city traffic or an engineer .”
It is because universities have become factories generating 1000’s of degree holders every year. But do we need such degree holders or we need trained people who can start a ‘workshop’ of his own or cope up with the fast changing job trend and competition thus becoming market friendly.

This is the reason why companies like a, b, c..(name omitted here but all service based IT giants) conduct their separate exams for recruitment apart from the individual’s degree.

In reference I would like to give the example of ‘GANGADHAR YADAV’ , a gardener in IIM-L who at his early 20’s was involved in quality work such that he was offered a job of a non-matriculate sales executive by visiting Vice-presidents of a reputed MNC. Who could have predicted a non-graduate becoming a manager .

Other examples are Rabindra Nath Tagore, Ramkrishna Paramhans, Dhirubhai Ambai, Ramanujam. These all had no degree but were vey successful.

During the last visit of Mr. Bill Gates to India he commented, “ Immense employment opportunities could be created in India if you people get oriented according to industry.

Friends we have to accept that our education institutes suffers from Bureaucrat & political approach because of which we are becoming “bookish” and “Theoretical” .
Today also we use the same outdated curriculum with no vocational or industry oriented education which has created unemployment.
Time has changed but the degrees haven’t and even a mechanic working under an engineer knows more about the machine .
One can’t test the quantity of water in the ocean , so is the case of testing knowledge of a degree holder.
This is the reason that even acquiring 8% growth we lack product competition.
At last I would like to say that :-
Judge not that ye may not be judged
